Standup

What

The purpose of a Standup is for the whole team to synchronise on the progress made towards the Goals, to identify and remove anything slowing down progress and to make incremental improvements to the process. The daily scrum meeting is not used as a problem-solving or issue resolution meeting. Issues that are raised are taken offline and usually dealt with by the relevant subgroup immediately after the meeting.

Why

By focusing on what each person accomplished yesterday and will accomplish today, the team gains an excellent understanding of what work has been done and what work remains. The daily scrum meeting is not a status update meeting in which a boss is collecting information about who is behind schedule. Rather, it is a meeting in which team members make commitments to each other. https://www.mountaingoatsoftware.com/agile/scrum/meetings/daily-scrum

Attendees:

Dev team is mandatory, PO and stakeholders optional (but should only as observers and generally not speak)

Duration

15 mins, then breakout after that. (Book 30 minutes for the meeting)

When

Daily except for the first day of the sprint, when the standup is done at the end of the Sprint Planning Meeting

Agenda

  • Each team member (in random order to increase attention), answers 3 questions:
    • What progress I made yesterday towards sprint goals
    • What am I committing to do today
    • What is slowing me down (nobody ever says they have blockers, so ask different questions to find impediments)
